The "starting from zero" myth
You are not starting from zero — you are switching context. Skills like leading, negotiating, analyzing data, and solving problems are transferable.
Map your transferable skills
- List 10 deliverables you are proud of in your current career.
- For each, write the main verb (e.g., "aligned", "decided", "sold").
- See which verbs appear in the new job posting.
Rewrite the resume by function, not by title
- Instead of "Sales Manager", group deliverables as "Customer research", "Decision-making", "Executive presentation".
Use side projects as proof
Courses, freelance work, open-source contributions, and volunteering count. Treat them as seriously as paid roles.
A dedicated cover letter
The letter becomes the place to explain the switch in 3 sentences:
- Why this field now.
- What you have already done that prepares you.
- How you plan to ramp up.
Do not hide the transition
Companies value candidates who acknowledge the learning curve and show a plan to shorten it.
