Illuminated path representing a career transition

The "starting from zero" myth

You are not starting from zero — you are switching context. Skills like leading, negotiating, analyzing data, and solving problems are transferable.

Map your transferable skills

  1. List 10 deliverables you are proud of in your current career.
  2. For each, write the main verb (e.g., "aligned", "decided", "sold").
  3. See which verbs appear in the new job posting.

Rewrite the resume by function, not by title

  • Instead of "Sales Manager", group deliverables as "Customer research", "Decision-making", "Executive presentation".

Use side projects as proof

Courses, freelance work, open-source contributions, and volunteering count. Treat them as seriously as paid roles.

A dedicated cover letter

The letter becomes the place to explain the switch in 3 sentences:

  1. Why this field now.
  2. What you have already done that prepares you.
  3. How you plan to ramp up.

Do not hide the transition

Companies value candidates who acknowledge the learning curve and show a plan to shorten it.
