What STAR means

  • Situation: the context of the problem.
  • Task: your responsibility in it.
  • Action: what you specifically did.
  • Result: the measurable impact.

Why recruiters love it

STAR answers show reasoning, not opinion. They are also easy to compare across candidates.

Common mistakes

  • Talking only about the team and never about you.
  • Skipping the result or saying "I helped improve".
  • Stories that run too long — keep it to 90 seconds.

A good example

S: Churn rose 18% over three months.
T: As PM, I was responsible for finding the root cause and proposing a plan.
A: I interviewed 20 churned customers, found 3 patterns, and prioritized two.
A: Shipped two onboarding changes within one sprint.
R: Churn dropped 11 points in 8 weeks.

How to practice

List 5 stories from your career that cover: leadership, conflict, failure, result, learning. Adapt one to each behavioral question.
